It seems that there is a mod called Epic Play 2.1 that allows you to play as an epic creature in core Spore. You can try it one time.

i have a steam version but to download mods without mod api you need to go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Spore and in here you will see the DataEP1 folder, the mod must be a package folder and you need to put the package in the DataEP1 folder and it should work now
